So, what is Dedicated Hardware?
Although we technically coined the term– the concept is not new.
Dedicated Hardware is two fold:
First, dedicated switchers are used to switch between multiple cameras. We use the ATEM mini Pro ISO and the ATEM Production 4k. These dedicated switchers have one job– to mix and cut multiple camera signals into one cohesive image for your audience. This image is called the program feed, and it is what your audience will see. Because switchers have a singular goal, the chances of something going wrong in the middle of your event, like the feed being lost, are significantly reduced.
The second part of our Dedicated Hardware approach is the use of hardware encoders. These take the program feed and make it web ready. We use encoding boxes like: Teradek Vidi Pro, Teradek Cube 755 that help us keep your live-stream running smoothly and maintain the high quality viewers expect.
So, why is Dedicated Hardware so Important to Live-streaming?
Put simply, computers sometimes seem to have a mind of their own. And when you trust software to act as your switcher/ encoder, a lot can go wrong. In fact, without Dedicated Hardware, you risk losing your feed altogether if the CPU or other processes become overwhelmed and crash.
Trust us, nothing is worse than a Windows10 update starting in the background and taking up all your internet speed, while you’re trying to live-stream an important event! Diminished quality, severe lag and, dropped feeds are issues we have seen first hand from people thinking they can trust computers. Hint: you can’t.
